Stop booking-provider referrals distorting campaign attribution
Trace booking handoffs and distinguish technical return traffic from genuine acquisition sources.

Identify the handoff that changes the story
A campaign visitor may leave your site to schedule a meeting and return with the booking provider shown as a referral source. The report then appears to credit the scheduling tool instead of explaining the original marketing journey.
Map the domains involved and who controls them. Distinguish a hosted page you can instrument from a third-party application with restricted access. Do not assume every external booking link supports the same measurement configuration or allows your tags.
Reproduce the complete booking journey
Start from a controlled campaign link, visit the landing page, open scheduling and return through the actual confirmation route. Record URL changes, redirects, consent choices and observed events. Test cancellation as well as successful booking so the measurement does not confuse both outcomes.
Google's unwanted-referrals guidance explains cases where third-party domains act as part of a business interaction rather than a meaningful acquisition source. Excluding a referral changes its treatment; it does not automatically repair missing events or establish unified identity across domains.
Use a source-integrity worksheet
For each route, record the initiating source, outbound destination, return URL, observed referral and confirmed booking status. Use DebugView for the events available on your controlled pages. Keep the booking platform's operational confirmation as separate evidence.
Check whether a campaign parameter is lost during redirects or whether the return page triggers a misleading completion event. Review the provider's supported integration before implementing changes. A broad referral exclusion can hide genuine referrals from a domain that also sends new visitors.
- The test begins with a known acquisition source.
- Successful and cancelled bookings remain distinguishable.
- Referral exclusions have a documented business reason.
- Missing cross-domain data is disclosed rather than guessed.
Validate the narrowest appropriate correction
Apply the supported configuration that addresses the observed problem, then repeat the original journeys. Avoid using campaign tags on internal navigation as an attribution repair; that can introduce a different source distortion. Involve the analytics owner when domain identity needs coordinated configuration.
Annotate the change and retain a reconciliation between booked appointments and measured completions. Reports should explain their limitations, particularly where the external provider restricts visibility. Better attribution means a more defensible interpretation, not certainty about every buyer touchpoint.
