Planning a cricket sponsor prize promotion responsibly
Map promoter responsibilities, significant conditions, prize permissions and data handling before launching an activation.

Define the promotion before the creative
A cricket sponsor promotion needs an operational plan before it needs a headline. Decide who can enter, how entry works, what the prize includes and who administers the process. Keep the commercial purpose clear: a promotion may encourage engagement, but it does not automatically generate qualified business demand.
ASA guidance states that promotional rules apply to consumer and trade promotions and promotional elements of sponsorships. The arrangement’s sponsorship label therefore does not remove the need to assess the promotion itself. Identify the relevant requirements before commissioning artwork, printing codes or announcing a closing date.
Confirm the prize and responsibilities
Obtain written confirmation that the prize exists, is available and can be used in the proposed way. Hospitality allocations, tickets and signed items may carry transfer or promotional-use restrictions. Do not imply player involvement or official competition affiliation unless the relevant permissions have been confirmed.
Identify the promoter and any co-promoters, including who manages enquiries, selection, fulfilment and complaints. ASA guidance explains that responsibility can extend across joint promotions. Put the practical allocation of work in writing, while recognising that a private agreement does not necessarily determine how regulators assess responsibility.
Make conditions visible and understandable
Prepare the significant conditions alongside the main promotional message, with accessible full terms. Address eligibility, entry limits, closing date, selection process, notification and material restrictions. Obtain qualified advice on the mechanism where needed; prize promotions can raise legal questions beyond advertising rules, including whether a structure creates an unlawful lottery.
An illustrative planning sheet might describe a free-entry business workshop promotion with a confirmed venue package and a documented selection process. It is only a worksheet example, not a ready-to-launch legal template. Avoid adding unreviewed purchase requirements or changing material conditions after people have entered.
Separate entry data from marketing
Explain what information is needed to administer entry and how it will be used. Do not assume entering supplies permission for sponsor newsletters or data sharing. Review the applicable ICO guidance and any required consent separately, with a genuine choice that is not concealed within general acceptance of terms.
Test the entry journey, recordkeeping and fulfilment process before launch. Afterwards, report valid entries, delivery issues and relevant downstream enquiries without presenting every entrant as a sales lead. Muntery Strategic should treat a promotion as a controlled activation with defined responsibilities, not an easy shortcut to a reusable contact database.
