Running a cricket sponsorship renewal review

Use delivery evidence, commercial learning and future capacity to decide whether to renew, redesign or end a partnership.

Separate renewal from appreciation

A positive relationship deserves recognition, but renewal remains a business decision. Begin the review with the original objective and agreement rather than a celebratory highlights reel. Ask what was delivered, what the sponsor actually used and what evidence exists about the resulting audience or commercial response.

Include both parties’ workload. A partnership may have delivered visible benefits while relying on unsustainable volunteer effort or unplanned sponsor staffing. The ECB’s fundraising guidance provides useful context for clubs seeking financial resilience, but a renewable commercial arrangement also needs a delivery model that people can maintain.

Build an evidence pack

Collect the signed inventory, approved changes, delivery records, spending and agreed performance measures. Distinguish completed assets from unused allocations. If hospitality places were available but the sponsor did not invite guests, record the difference rather than treating all weak performance as a failure by the rights holder.

Add a limitations section. Explain uncertain attendance estimates, missing baseline data and opportunities influenced by several channels. Public claims in a renewal announcement require the same care as other advertising; ASA guidance confirms that communications referring to sponsorship can fall within its scope.

Compare three practical options

Assess renewal on the existing basis, renewal with a redesigned scope and an orderly end. For each option, show likely costs, operational requirements and unresolved permissions. Do not assume that a higher fee is justified by a longer list of assets if the sponsor lacks capacity to activate them.

An illustrative redesign might replace several low-use hospitality allocations with one planned customer event, subject to the rights holder’s agreement and availability. This is a negotiation example, not a claim that assets are interchangeable. Confirm any revised rights, prices and responsibilities in writing before announcing the next term.

Agree the next decision and the exit tasks

Set a decision deadline that allows proper budgeting and production. Name the people responsible for internal approval and outstanding evidence. If the partnership ends, plan removal of expired logos and designations, supplier notifications and handling of retained information. Ending professionally protects both organisations and avoids misleading continuing-association claims.

For a renewed agreement, establish a better baseline and fewer, clearer measures. Muntery Strategic can frame the review around what each party learned and what must change. The strongest renewal argument is a credible future plan supported by evidence, not an invented return figure or an appeal to loyalty alone.
