Choose the question before the metric

Cricket sponsorship measurement should begin with the decision the sponsor needs to make. Is the partnership intended to create awareness, develop business relationships or support a community programme? These objectives require different evidence. A single dashboard score can conceal the distinction rather than simplify it.

Write one primary question and a small number of supporting measures. For example: did an approved business event create relevant follow-up conversations with target accounts? That can be assessed more directly than a broad promise to increase brand value, provided the team records attendance and next steps consistently.

Separate four layers of evidence

Track delivery first: installed signage, published content and completed events. Then record audience exposure using clearly described methods. Next measure response, such as landing-page enquiries or requested introductions. Finally assess commercial progression, including held meetings, qualified opportunities and won business where the evidence supports that connection.

Do not add website visits, attendees and social impressions together as unique people. Explain whether figures are measured, estimated or supplied by a partner. ASA sponsorship guidance makes clear that advertising referring to sponsorship can remain within scope, so public performance claims deserve the same evidence discipline as other marketing.

Create an illustrative reporting worksheet

Use columns for objective, measure, baseline, collection method, owner and limitation. A sample row could be: relationship development; held follow-up discussions; baseline not available; CRM records checked weekly; sales owner; other marketing may influence progression. This is a proposed worksheet, not a reported campaign result.

Where contact data is collected, explain the purpose and limit access. ICO guidance remains relevant even when the records concern businesspeople. Aggregate reporting is often sufficient for a sponsor review; named attendee lists should not be shared merely to make a presentation look more commercially valuable.

Report uncertainty alongside results

Distinguish sponsorship-sourced opportunities from opportunities that already existed and were later influenced by hospitality or content. Define the attribution window before reviewing results. If a buyer mentions several touchpoints, record that complexity rather than assigning the full contract value to whichever activity reported first.

Close the review with actions: retain a useful asset, improve a weak handover, test a different invitation or stop an activity. Muntery Strategic can use this structure to connect marketing reporting with sales decisions. The aim is credible learning, not an inflated return figure or an unsupported promise of future performance.
