How to qualify cricket sponsorship prospects before pitching
Prioritise potential sponsors using business fit, decision readiness, delivery feasibility and responsible contact practices.

Distinguish interest from commercial fit
A company director who enjoys cricket is not automatically a suitable sponsorship prospect. Qualification asks whether the business has a relevant objective, an appropriate audience and the capacity to activate the partnership. Personal enthusiasm can open a conversation, but it should not replace a defensible business case.
Start with a narrow segment, such as employers recruiting locally or service businesses building regional relationships. Document why the proposed club or programme could be relevant. Do not infer spending power from company size alone or claim audience overlap without evidence that the rights holder can reasonably provide.
Use a transparent qualification worksheet
Score five areas from zero to two: objective fit, audience relevance, budget readiness, decision access and delivery feasibility. Treat the score as a sorting aid, not a prediction of purchase. A high total should not override a serious concern about reputation, safeguarding or an unresolvable category conflict.
An illustrative prospect might score strongly on local relevance but poorly on activation capacity because nobody can manage the partnership. The useful next step is then a smaller package or an internal ownership discussion, not a larger presentation. Record evidence beside every score so colleagues can challenge assumptions.
Ask questions that expose readiness
In discovery, ask what the business wants to change, who owns the objective, which budget might support it and when approval happens. Explore how results would be reviewed and what would make the partnership unsuitable. These questions reveal whether the prospect needs information, internal alignment or an actual proposal.
Check asset constraints early. Published sponsorship packages illustrate possible benefits, not transferable rights. Confirm category exclusivity, logo use, guest access and content permissions with the seller. Advertising about a partnership also needs separate attention; ASA guidance does not treat every sponsorship-related communication as outside its scope.
Qualify the contact route as well
Before outreach, identify the recipient type, contact source and applicable marketing requirements. ICO guidance distinguishes corporate subscribers from sole traders and some partnerships, while UK GDPR may still apply to named business contacts. Publicly listed details are not a blanket permission to run any campaign.
Use three outcomes in the pipeline: ready for a scoped proposal, nurture only through an appropriate contact route, or unsuitable. Record the reason and next review date. For Muntery Strategic, disciplined qualification should reduce wasted work while keeping claims, targeting and follow-up proportionate to the evidence available.
