Separate the event budget from platform settings

A seasonal campaign needs a commercial spending limit, not just a larger daily budget in an advertising account. The event may involve media, creative production, agency work and sales coverage. Record the complete approved exposure before deciding what a platform should spend.

Distinguish committed costs from costs that can still be stopped. A campaign pause may prevent further advertising delivery while leaving production invoices payable. Finance and the campaign owner should agree which amount is being controlled and in which currency.

Understand the spending mechanism

Google Ads describes an average daily budget rather than a universal hard daily cap. Its spending-limit guidance explains that most campaigns can spend above that average on a particular day, subject to applicable limits. Check the rules for the actual campaign type before presenting a daily figure as maximum exposure.

Google also documents seasonal budget adjustments that schedule temporary increases. Review start and end dates, account time zone and interactions with manual edits. A scheduled return should still be checked rather than assumed.

Build a budget exception worksheet

For each campaign, record the baseline, temporary adjustment, approved event allocation, dates, reporting delay and authorised decision-maker. Include a conservative scenario for additional spend before a problem is noticed. Monitoring frequency should reflect the exposure the business can tolerate.

Define reasons to stop beyond poor lead volume. Broken forms, unavailable inventory, misleading creative and consent failures may justify intervention before commercial performance can be assessed. Give the person on duty permission to act within documented boundaries.

  • Event allocation includes non-media commitments.
  • Temporary increases have an owner and end condition.
  • Alerts identify who checks and who can pause.
  • Rollback verification is scheduled after the event.

Reconcile before repeating the increase

At the end of the window, verify platform settings and reconcile billed costs against the approved allocation. Account for late invoices and reporting adjustments. Do not call the campaign efficient by comparing final spend with an incomplete set of outcomes.

Review the guardrails separately from campaign effectiveness. A campaign can stay within budget and still attract unsuitable inquiries; it can also generate useful opportunities while exposing the business to unacceptable spending risk. Improve each control using the actual exceptions observed.
